World music songs for Christmas.
Hungarian vocal folklore as a student of ethnology at the ELTE University in Budapest, while touring Europe with the vocalist band Vándor Vokál, performing polyphonic songs of the nations in the Balkan and Carpathian- Basin region. The work with the famous Makám band has brought her a wider popularity on world-musical stages. She has also been invited to sing on popular Flemish band Kadril’s album De Andere Kust, and after the recording also numerous successful concerts have followed. At present she is featured as a solo vocalist of innumerable albums and bands; be it folk music, poems set to music, old music or world music. She is a guest performer at the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble in Budapest, concerts with luthier Kónya István, appears in the renown Sebô Ensemble, appears as a solo vocalist of the Etnofon Zenei Társulás and the Szájról szájra production, and her own world music band established in 2006. Szilvia was invited to appear on one of Sebestyén Márta’s albums, and Márta has in a way become the ’musical mother’ of Szilvia during the recording of her own solo album Song Preserves the Heartbeat of Time. She was awarded the Artisjus performer’s prize in 2004 and the eMeRTon prize of the Hungarian Radio in the category of Folk Singer of the Year, and she received the Kodály Zoltán Memorial Award in 2007.

Ditties. About lovers, happy and unhappy brides, parting and letting go, courage, love and predestination... All this is put into words and melody with the help of Hungarian folksongs, completed by a poetical song of the Chuvash in which they praise their relatives, also by a fine, elegantly dancing short Cheremis song, and a Bulgarian mountain song that sounds sharply from afar.

"The 2005 release by the Flemish folk rock band features three great female vocalists, Kadril singer Mariken Boussemaere, English singer Heather Grabham and the wonderful Hungarian singer Szilvia Bognár. The songs include traditional Flemish, Hungarian and British emigration songs and tunes.
Flemish band Kadril gives us a history lesson on a disc with this multi-faceted release. The nineteen songs here loosely weave the story of emigration to America through the port of Antwerp during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They've invited a few friends along to help tell the story. English singer Heather Grabham, Flemish singer Mariken Boussemaere, and Hungarian singer Szilvia Bognar lend their voices to the tale. Adding touches such as clawhammer banjo, brass band, and spaghetti western guitars to the traditional buzzy, drony Flemish sound makes this one of the more variegated releases to come down the pike in a while."

"Makám was formed in 1984 with the purpose of establishing a peculiar form of community playing music, a special synthesis of harmonies, trying to show the common characteristics belonging together in music cultures of different peoples and contrasting musical forms.
MAKÁM Group is the most characteristic Hungarian representative of the New Tradition.
The MAKÁM Group plays traditional inspirational chamber music strongly tied to the oriental music cultures. The music world their joint compositions is based on the scales of Eastern (ragas), Bulgarian-Turkish scale variations (makams) or the typical mood of the half-tone scales frequently used Bartók. Songs sounding like Hungarian folk ballads and arrangements by musicians with contemporary and jazz skills – this is what Makám offers in its last albums, including the newest one. The growing audience of their concerts proves that this mix works. The beautiful voice of Szilvia Bognár brings life and tenderness to the very precise compositions of Zoltán Krulik."

„One could hardly write with more sensitivity about the treasures we have inherited from past centuries, kept alive – among others – by folklore. Such are the folksongs and folk ballads passed down from generation to generation, dedicated to momentary and at the same time ageless emotions, destinies and events. Not only the beauty of the melodies, the refined and forever valid lyrics are fascinating, but also the whole body of traditions and beliefs hidden between the lines. These ’insignificant little songs’ are imprints of a traditional culture once flourishing, but now only surviving in scattered shreds. They have preserved countless secrets and messages, whose deciphering can be an immense pleasure for the modern listener. This belief has led me to compile this album.
I have woven the fabric of a storyline, telling the path of woman’s life, from traditional songs, prayers, and excerpts from children’s games. Birth – marriage – death: the turning points of life are interwoven with the periods of childhood and of choosing a partner, followed by the decades of married life, where the life of the husband and the children is emphasized.
I sing the story, and my musician companions paly the music arranged by Zoltán Kovács. So do the ’Songs watch over Time’, and so do we preserve the songs...”

Ancient Hungarian folk songs with contemporary accompaniment - the unique sound of Makám. Makám was formed in 1984 with the purpose of establishing a peculiar form of community playing music, a special synthesis of harmonies, trying to show the common characteristics belonging together in music cultures of different peoples and contrasting musical forms.
This is a sort of chamber music containing the elements of ancient Hungarian folk music, classical and contemporary music as well as jazz and rock. It's melody and rhythm are influenced by the East European, Balkan, African and Oriental music.
We are convinced that the ancient Hungarian Folk Music is in deep relation with Eastern Traditions. So we arrived at the cultures which are, geographically, far from Hungary.

Perhaps the greatest musical surprises of recent years have been those musical experiments which approach the most beautiful songs of the treasure of Hungarian folk music in an unexpected way, that is, not with the accompaniments of authentic folk music, but rather within quite different musical environment. As a result, many musical phenomena have been accepted which might earlier have seemed inconceivable. Now we know that folk songs can be accompanied just as wonderfully by a stylishly composed jazz arrangement, in a similar way to world music, which gains inspiration from the instrumental traditions of other peoples and places emphasis on their spiritual affinity. The album ‘From Mouth to Mouth’ is sure to attract attention both in Hungary and further afield and bring yet more success to all those involved in the project.
